Fiji Agromarketing Authority (AMA) is extending its services to Fiji’s maritime areas, a move inspired by its recent trip to the Lau Group.
AMA was part of a recent delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture & Waterways, led by line Ministry Vatimi Rayalu that visited Vanuavatu, Lakeba, Vanuabalavu, Cicia, Matuku, Totoya, and Moala.
Logistic hurdles pose huge challenges to farmers from these remote islands who wish to bring their produce to mainland markets, AMA said in a statement.
“This was an opportunity to bring AMA’s services to them, shedding light on the available assistance that we provide,” said executive chairman Jone Sovalawa.
“These difficulties underscore the essential need to support these individuals.
“The core focus of AMA’s assistance revolves around facilitating the purchase, sale, and export of agricultural commodities, encompassing both agro and aqua products,” he said.
The Lau trip was an opportunity for the government’s agriculture marketing arm to buy coconuts, fish, vau, and sasa brooms from local farmers, helping them save on travel costs to Suva.
Villagers in Vanuabalavu, where the copra mill is no longer in operation, it was an opportunity to sell their copra on their doorstep.
“Beyond the immediate convenience, the expansion of AMA’s services bridges the gap between isolated communities and the broader market. The Fiji Agromarketing’s endeavor to promote and support farmers in rural and maritime areas represents a critical stride towards fostering a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural sector,” AMA said.
